Long-term temporal structure of catchment sediment response to precipitation in a humid mountain badland area

A long-term database with information on precipitation, discharge and sediment yield dynamics was analyzed to characterize the temporal structure response of a catchment in humid mountain badland area. Due non-linearity non-stationary nature data, combination frequency analysis wavelet reconstruction techniques were initially used determine dominant time scales yield. Within full spectrum scales, spectral could distinguish ones governing overall trend time-series. Furthermore, multiresolution technique enabled accurate de-noising hydrometric time-series, by filtering out high intermittent processes superimposed main signal. Geomorphological metrics subsequently applied filtered data link response. The combined frequency-geomorphological provides physical explanation complete precipitation. This features components from intra-annual, annual multi-year scales. Intra-annual are led climatological characteristics site (seasonal rainfall patterns Pyrenean catchment). related reveals importance storage/depletion cycle catchment: although driver is discharge, weathering storage also major control factors. Therefore, correct management requires multi-temporal water fluxes be controlled. herein outlined detailed databases can accepted as an adequate tool for terms flood forecasting or reservoir operation.
